U10 tournament - 2016 (Last updated 11/13/16 @ 1:00 PM)

Pool Play Pools & Standings Pool Play Schedule - Boys Pool Play Schedule - Girls Playoffs Playoff Schedule

Coaches & assistants: Please be sure to read ALL of the information and make sure that you understand it. If you have a question please ask, don't assume.

Congratulations to G02 and B04 who will go on to represent Redwood City in the Area tournament in Foster City on Dec. 3rd and 4th. A big thank you to all parents, coaches, referees, and players for making this a great season.

Overview

The U10 tournament is designed to maximize the amount of games that teams will play and consists of two phases: pool play and sudden death playoffs. Pool play takes place on Saturday Oct. 29th and Nov. 5th. Sudden death playoffs are held on Saturday Nov. 12th with the finals on Sunday Nov. 13th. This year, with the addition of lights to the field, all of the games will be held on 49er.

The winner of the boys tournament and the winner of the girls tournament advance to the Area 2N tournament which will be held on December 3rd & 4th in Foster city.

Coaches meeting

A MANDATORY pre-tournament coaches meeting will be held on Wednesday Oct. 26th, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM. The meeting will be at the Community Activities Building (1400 Roosevelt) in room #2.

Failure to send a team representative will result in a one (1) point deduction during pool play. At the meeting we will go over the tournament rules. You will need to turn in your player ratings in advance of or at the meeting. Failure to do so, will result in a one (1) point deduction. Our apologies for the stick, but that is our only way of making sure this gets done.

General Comments

  1. Please keep the AYSO philosophies of Good Sportsmanship and Positive Coaching in mind during the tournament.
  2. Parents, friends, distant relatives etc. are the coach's responsibility. Please remind your parents that if they bring relatives & friends to the game that they need to behave in a respectful manner.
  3. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed at AYSO events.
  4. Dogs, BBQs, food, sunflower seeds etc. (see the city signs posted at the fields) are not allowed on the synthetic all weather fields.
  5. Problems or issues that may arise will be resolved by the tournament committee, which shall consist of the Division Coordinator, the Coach Administrator, the Referee Administrator, the CVPA, and the Regional Commissioner.
  6. All decisions are final and no protests will be allowed.

Referee points

Teams can earn additional points towards their pool play total by recruiting referees. Point are earned in the following manner:

  1. Any new referee (gaining Regional certification in the current calendar year) who works at least five games as a Referee or Assistant Referee earns 1 point.
  2. Any referee (Regional or above) working in the fall season as a Referee or Assistant Referee in U10, U12, or U14 Redwood City homes games, earns 1 point for every 10 games up to a maximum of 3 points (30 or more games).
  3. Points are cumulative with the new referee bonus (e.g. A new referee working 10 games earns 2 points and can earn a maximum of 4 points for 30 games).
  4. Points will be credited to the U10 team a referee is 'associated' with.
  5. A Referee can only be 'associated' with one team.
  6. A team can receive a maximum of 4 points.
  7. Points will be applied prior to the start of the tournament.

Pool Play

Teams are divided into pools based loosely on season performance. The top tier teams are randomly assigned to seperate pools, the next tier is distributed likewise (i.e. randomly), etc. This is done to create pools that are as balanced and random as possible. Each team will play four games, two on each weekend of pool play. Teams in a pool of 5 will play every other team in their pool once. Teams in a pools of 4 will play every other team in their pool once and will then play their 4th game(s) against a team from another short handed pool.

Games are scheduled from 8:00 AM on in 45 minutes intervals. Due to this very tight schedule, you must have your team present and READY TO PLAY (at least 5 players, line up card ready, etc.) 15 minutes prior to the match. Please show up at the U10 tournament tent, located near the 49er field, to be checked in. A forfeit will be declared if a team is unable to play (insufficient # of players, not checked in, no coach, no medical forms, etc.) within 5 minutes PRIOR of the scheduled start time. Teams must take the field immediately upon termination of the previous match. When your match is done, please leave the field and its vicinity as quickly as possible. The schedule is exceptionally tight so please help us make the tournament run smoothly.

  • Matches will consist of two 15 minutes halves
  • Half time will be 5 minutes and teams must return PROMPTLY to the field when summoned by the referee
  • Substitutions will ONLY take place at the half
  • Players that are present are required to play at least half of the match
  • In addition:
    • For teams with a roster of ten (10): All players must play at least one (1) complete match and six (6) of your players must play at least two (2) complete matches
    • For teams with a roster of nine (9): All players must play at least two (2) complete matches
    • If a match is forfeit, then the requirement becomes that all players must play at least one full match.
  • Note: Two half matches DO NOT make a complete one - show up to the coaches meeting if you have questions!
  • An absent player will be counted as having played the whole match
  • A player who arrives during the first half will be credited with having played that half, but must still play the 2nd half
  • A different goalkeeper must be used in each half (goalkeeper changes will NOT be allowed during play except for injury)
  • If a player is injured and leaves the field, the coach may either 1) substitute the player (the injured player may not return until the next substitution opportunity - the injured player is credited with having played a half, regardless of the actual time played) or 2) “play short” thereby allowing the injured player to return (the player must wait for the referee's permission to return). Any attempt to manipulate the injury substitution rule to try and game the system will result in sanctions.
  • Teams are not required to play down
  • There are no second chances on throw-ins or other incorrect restarts (the LOTG will be applied)
  • All other U10 rules apply
  • Matches may end in a tie

Points will be awarded/deducted and disciplinary actions taken as follows:

  • +6 points for a win
  • +3 points for a tie
  • 0 points for a loss
  • +1 point for each goal scored up to a maximum of 3
  • +1 point for a shutout (a 0 – 0 tie does not count as a shutout)
  • A forfeit will be scored as a 1 – 0 match in favor of the team that was present. If both teams forfeit then neither will receive any points.
  • –1 point for each caution (Yellow Card)
  • –2 points for each send-off (Red Card) Note: a 2nd caution in the same match will be counted as a total deduction of –2 points
  • –4 points if a coach or assistant coach is expelled
  • –2 points per substitution violation - a team with more than 4 substitution voilatons may be disqualified
  • The outcome of an abandoned or terminated match will be determined by the tournament committee
  • Additional points may be deducted, matches declared forfeit, or teams disqualified, if the tournament committee deems that necessary to deal with egregious situations
  • Player sanctions may also be imposed for misconduct, bad sportsmanship, or substitution violations as determined by the tournament committee

Tie breakers will be as follows:

  1. Head-to-head play
  2. Least points deducted
  3. Least goals allowed
  4. Most goals scored
  5. Kicks from the penalty mark (we hope that it does not come to this... The time and place will be determined by the Division Director)

Coaches, you need to plan your substitutions over the 4 matches to avoid having problems. On any given game the referees will only check to see if all players play at least 1/2 of the game. It is your responsibility to make sure that your players play the proper amount of complete games. At the end of each game, come to the tournament table to review your game card to ensure it accurately reflects your substitutions and the match result, All line up cards will be reviewed at the end of pool play and points will be deducted for any substitution violations. We have had teams that did not move on from pool play because of substitution violations. If a player arrives late, is absent, leaves early, is injured etc., you should double check and make sure that this information is recorded by the referee on the lineup card. *** A team with more than four (4) substitution violations MAY BE DISQUALIFIED. ***

Pools & Standings

The top two (2) teams from each pool advance. Since there are only 3 girls pools, of the remaining teams, the two (2) with the most points will also advance.

Playoffs

8 teams will participate in the playoffs which will consist of quarter-finals, semi-finals, a consolation game for the 3rd and 4th place finishers, and a final.

  • Matches are single elimination
  • Matches will consist of two twenty five (25) minute halves
  • Half time will be 5 minutes and teams must return PROMPTLY to the field when summoned by the referee
  • Substitutions will take place approximately midway throught the first and second halves, and at half time
  • No player will sit out 2 quarters until all have sat out 1
  • All players who are present must play at least half of the match
  • Players cannot sit out back-to-back "quarters"
  • A player arriving during the 1st "quarter" is only required to play two "quarters"
  • A player arriving during the 2nd or 3rd "quarters" is only required to play one "quarter"
  • If a player is injured and leaves the field, the coach may either 1) substitute the player (the injured player may not return until the next substitution opportunity - the injured player is credited with a “quarter” played regardless of the actual time played) or 2) “play short” thereby allowing the injured player to return (the player must wait for the referee's permission to return). Any attemp to manipulate the injury substitution rule to try and game the system will result in sanctions.
  • No one player may be a goalkeeper for more than two quarters (goalkeeper changes will NOT be allowed during play except for injury)
  • Teams are not required to play down

Consolation matches may end in a tie. For all the other matches, a winner is required and the following rules apply:

  • If a match is tied at the end of regulation play, two seven (7) minute overtime periods will be played. (Note: there is no golden goal).
  • Free substitution will be allowed during OT but only at throw-ins (on your possession), goal kicks (either team), kickoffs (either team), or injuries (only the injured player). Remember to get the referee's approval before substituting.
  • If the match is still tied at the end of the two overtime periods, then the winner will be determined by kicks from the penalty mark.
  • Only those players on the field of play at the end of OT may participate in kicks from the penalty mark. Coaches and substitutes must stay off the field during that time.
  • The outcome of an abandoned or terminated match will be determined by the tournament committee
  • A match may be declared forfeit, or teams disqualified, if the tournament committee deems that necessary to deal with egregious situations
  • Player sanctions may also be imposed for misconduct, bad sportsmanship, or substitution violations as determined by the tournament committee

Playoff Schedule (Boys & Girls)

The boys playoff births are set as shown below. The girls are more complicated with the playoff births based on standings: All the first place teams from each pool and the top 2nd place team are assigned to different quarter-finals. The other teams are assigned to a quarter-final subject to the constraint that no team will play another team from the same pool. In addition, the top 2nd place team will be assigned a quarter-final that avoids it meeting the first place team from its pool in a semi-final. If possible, an attempt is also made to minimize the possibility that teams from the same pool meet in the semi finals.
