U12 Tournament - 2016 (last updated: 11/13/16 @ 1:00 PM)

Pool Play Pool schedule - Boys Pool schedule - Girls Pools & Standings Playoffs Playoff Schedule

Coaches & assistants: Please be sure to read ALL of the information and make sure that you understand it. If you have a question ask, don't assume.

Congratulations to B05 & G06 who won the tournament and will go on to represent Redwood City at the Area tournament on Dec. 3rd & 4th in Foster City. A big thank you to all parents, coaches, referees, and players for making this a great season.

Overview

The U12 tournament will consist of two phases: pool play and playoffs. Round robin play will take place on Saturday Oct. 22nd, 29th, and Nov. 5th. Playoffs will be held on Saturday Nov. the 12th. The winner of the boy's tournament and the winner of the girl's tournament will advance to the Area 2N tournament which will be held on December 3rd & 4th in Foster city.

Coaches Meeting

A MANDATORY pre-tournament coaches meeting will be held on Tuesday Oct. 18th, from 7:30 – 8:30 PM. The meeting will be at the Community Activities Building (1400 Roosevelt) in room #2.

Failure to send a team representative will result in a one (1) point deduction during pool play. You will also need to turn in your player ratings at this meeting. Failure to do so, will result in a one (1) point deduction. Contact the division coordinator if you have any questions. Our apologies for the stick, but that is our only way of making sure this gets done.

General Comments

  1. Please keep the AYSO philosophies of Good Sportsmanship and Positive Coaching in mind during the tournament.
  2. Parents, friends, distant relatives etc. are the coach's responsibility. Please remind your parents that if they bring relatives & friends to the game that they need to behave in a respectful manner.
  3. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed at AYSO events.
  4. Dogs, BBQs, food, sunflower seeds etc. (see the city signs posted at the fields) are not allowed on the synthetic all weather fields.
  5. Problems or issues that may arise will be resolved by the tournament committee, which shall consist of the Division Coordinator, the Coach Administrator, the Referee Administrator, the CVPA, and the Regional Commissioner.
  6. All decisions are final and no protests will be allowed.

Pool Play

The boys teams are each divided into pools of four teams. The top "slice" of teams are randomly assigned to separate pools, the next slice are distributed likewise (i.e. randomly), etc. This is done to create pools that are as balanced and random as possible. Team assignments within a pool (A, B, ...) are random. The girls teams are in one big pool. Each team will play four games (note: on one of the Saturdays you will have to play two games). Since the teams will not all play each other, the team assignments will be fully random.

You must have your team present and READY TO PLAY (at least 6 players, line up card ready, etc.) 15 minutes prior to the match. A forfeit will be declared if a team is unable to play (insufficient # of players, not checked in, no coach, no medical forms, etc.) at the scheduled start time.

  • Matches will consist of two thirty (30) minutes halves.
  • Half time will be 5 minutes and teams must return PROMPTLY to the field when summoned by the referee
  • Substitutions will take place approximately midway throught the first and second halves and at half time
  • No player will sit out 2 quarters until all have sat out 1
  • All players who are present must play at least half of the match
  • Players cannot sit out back-to-back "quarters"
  • A player arriving during the 1st "quarter" is only required to play two "quarters"
  • A player arriving during the 2nd or 3rd "quarter" is only required to play one "quarter"
  • A player may NOT be a goalkeeper for more than 1/2 the match
  • If a player is injured and leaves the field, the coach may either: 1) substitute the player (the injured player may not return until the next substitution opportunity - the injured player is credited with a “quarter” played regardless of the actual time played) or 2) “play short” thereby allowing the injured player to return (the player must wait for the referee's permission to return). Any attempt to manipulate the injury substitution rule to try and game the system will result in sanctions.
  • Coaches should be prepared for substitutions and not waste playing time
  • Referees, at their discretion, may add time for injury or lengthy substitutions
  • Teams are not required to play down
  • Matches can end in a tie
  • For the girls, the top four teams (based on points) will go on to the playoffs
  • For the boys, the top team (based on points) from each pool will advance to the playoffs as well as the highest 2nd place team.

Points will be awarded/deducted and disciplinary actions taken as follows:

  • +6 points for a win
  • +3 points for a tie
  • 0 points for a loss
  • +1 point for each goal scored up to a maximum of 3
  • +1 point for a shutout (a 0 – 0 tie does not count as a shutout)
  • A forfeit will be scored as a 1 – 0 match in favor of the team that was present. If both teams forfeit then neither will receive any points.
  • –1 point for each caution (Yellow Card)
  • –2 points for each send-off (Red Card) Note: a 2nd caution in the same match will be counted as a total deduction of 2 points
  • –4 points if a coach or assistant coach is expelled
  • –2 points per substitution violation - a team with more than 4 substitution voilatons may be disqualified
  • The outcome of an abandoned or terminated match will be determined by the tournament committee
  • Additional points may be deducted, matches declared forfeit, or teams disqualified, if the tournament committee deems that necessary to deal with egregious situations
  • Player sanctions may also be imposed for misconduct, bad sportsmanship, or substitution violations as determined by the tournament committee

Tie breakers will be as follows:

  1. Head-to-head play
  2. Least points deducted
  3. Least goals allowed
  4. Most goals scored
  5. Kicks from the penalty mark (we hope that it does not come to this... the time and place will be determined by the league)

Pools & Standings

For the boys pools, the top team from each pool advances to the playoff round, as well as the second place team with the most point. For the girls pool, the top four teams will advance.

Playoffs

The top four teams from the girls pool, and the top team from each boys pool as well as the overall best 2nd place boys team, will participate in the playoffs which will consist of semi-finals, a consolation game for the 3rd and 4th place finishers, and a final.

  • Matches are single elimination
  • Matches will consist of two 30 minute halves
  • Half time will be 5 minutes and teams must return PROMPTLY to the field when summoned by the referee
  • Substitutions will take place approximately midway throught the first and second halves and at half time
  • No player will sit out 2 quarters until all have sat out 1
  • All players who are present must play at least half of the match
  • Players cannot sit out back-to-back "quarters"
  • A player arriving during the 1st "quarter" is only required to play two "quarters"
  • A player arriving during the 2nd or 3rd "quarters" is only required to play one "quarter"
  • A player may not be a goalkeeper for more than 1/2 the match
  • If a player is injured and leaves the field, the coach may either 1) substitute the player (the injured player may not return until the next substitution opportunity - the injured player is credited with a “quarter” played regardless of the actual time played) or 2) “play short” thereby allowing the injured player to return (the player must wait for the referee's permission to return). Any attemp to manipulate the injury substitution rule to try and game the system will result in sanctions.
  • Coaches should be prepared for substitutions and not waste playing time
  • Referees, at their discretion, may add time for injury or lengthy substitutions
  • Teams are not required to play down

Consolation matches may end in a tie. For all the other matches, a winner is required and the following rules apply:

  • If a match is tied at the end of regulation play, two 7 minute overtime periods will be played (Note: there is no golden goal).
  • Free substitution will be allowed during OT but only at throw-ins (on your possession), goal kicks (either team), kickoffs (either team), or injuries (only the injured player). Remember to get the referee's approval before substituting.
  • There are no restrictions on goalkeeper changes
  • If the match is still tied at the end of the two overtime periods, then the winner will be determined by kicks from the penalty mark.
  • Only those players on the field of play at the end of OT may participate in kicks from the penalty mark. Coaches and substitutes must stay off the field during that time.
  • The outcome of an abandoned or terminated match will be determined by the tournament committee
  • A match may be declared forfeit, or teams disqualified, if the tournament committee deems that necessary to deal with egregious situations
  • Player sanctions may also be imposed for misconduct, bad sportsmanship, or substitution violations as determined by the tournament committee
