10U Tournament - 2024 (last updated: 11/16/24 @ 10:20 PM)

Pool Play Pool schedule - Boys Pool schedule - Girls Pools & Standings Playoffs Playoff Schedule

Coaches: Please be sure to read ALL of the information and make sure that you understand it. If you have a question ask, don't assume.

Important notes:

  • The playoff results for Saturday have been posted.

Overview

The 10U tournament will consist of two phases: pool play and playoffs. Pool play will take place on Saturday Nov. 2nd, and Saturday Nov. 9th. Playoffs will be held on Saturday Nov. 16th and Sunday Nov. 17th. The winner of the Boys tournament and the winner of the Girls tournament will advance to the Area 2N tournament which will be held on December 7th & 8th, 2024, in Foster city.

Coaches Meeting

A MANDATORY pre-tournament coaches meeting will be held on Tuesday Oct. 29th from 7:00 – 8:30 PM (Red Morton Main Gym - 1120 Roosevelt - Room "A"). In addition to the Tournament information, we will also go over the player ratings form which you will need to turn in prior to the start of the tournament.

Failure to send a team representative to the coach meeting will result in a one (1) point deduction. Failure to turn in the player ratings prior to the tournament will result in a one (1) point deduction. Our apologies for the stick, but that is our only way of making sure everyone shows up and turns their player ratings in. Contact your division coordinator if you have any questions.

General Comments

  1. Coaches must wear their coach ID.
  2. Only two coaches are allowed in the technical area.
  3. Please keep the AYSO philosophies of Good Sportsmanship and Positive Coaching in mind during the tournament.
  4. Parents, friends, distant relatives etc. are the coach's responsibility. Please remind your parents that if they bring relatives & friends to the game that they need to behave in a respectful manner.
  5. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed at AYSO events.
  6. Dogs, BBQs, food, sunflower seeds etc. (see the city signs posted at the fields) are not allowed on the synthetic all weather fields.
  7. Problems or issues that may arise will be resolved by the tournament committee, which shall consist of the Division Coordinator, the Coach Administrator, the Referee Administrator, the CVPA, and the Regional Commissioner.
  8. All decisions are final and no protests will be allowed.

Referee Requirements and Points

To participate in the end-of-season tournament, every 10U team MUST provide referee coverage for 3 officiating slots (Referee or Assistant Referee) within the first 5 weeks of the season. The details of all the requirements and how additional points can be earned are on the 10U Referee Requirement page.

Pool Play

Teams are divided into pools based loosely on season performance. The top tier teams are randomly assigned to separate pools, the next tier is distributed likewise (i.e. randomly), etc. This is done to create pools that are as balanced and random as possible. Each team will play four games, two on each Saturday of pool play. The 14 girls teams are in two pools of 5 and one pool of 4. The 16 boys are in four pools of 4.

Games are scheduled from 8:00 AM on in 45 minute intervals. You must have your team present and READY TO PLAY (at least 5 players, line up card ready, etc.) 10 minutes prior to the match. Please show up at the 10U tournament tent, located near the 49er field, to be checked in. A forfeit may be declared if a team is unable to play (insufficient number of players, not checked in, no coach, no medical forms, etc.) at the scheduled start time. Teams should be ready to take the field upon termination of the previous match. When your match is done, please leave the field and its vicinity as quickly as possible. The schedule is very tight so please help us make the tournament run smoothly.

  • Matches will consist of two fifteen (15) minutes halves.
  • Half time will be 5 minutes and teams must return PROMPTLY to the field when summoned by the referee.

  • Substitutions will ONLY take place at the half.
  • Players that are present are required to play at least half of the match
  • In addition:
    • For teams with a roster of ten (11): All players must play at least one (1) complete match
    • For teams with a roster of ten (10): All players must play at least one (1) complete match and six (6) of your players must play at least two (2) complete matches
    • For teams with a roster of nine (9): All players must play at least two (2) complete matches
    • If a match is forfeit, then the requirement becomes that all players must play at least one full match, unless the forfeit is the final match and the roster size is 10 or 11.
  • Note: Two half-matches DO NOT make a complete one - show up to the coaches meeting if you have questions!
  • An absent player will be counted as having played the whole match.
  • A player who arrives during the first half will be credited with having played that half, but must still play the 2nd half.
  • A different goalkeeper must be used in each half (goalkeeper changes will NOT be allowed during play except for injury).
  • If a player is injured and leaves the field, the coach may either 1) substitute the player (the injured player may not return until the next substitution opportunity - the injured player is credited with having played a half, regardless of the actual time played)   or 2) “play short” thereby allowing the injured player to return (the player must wait for the referee's permission to return). Any attempt to manipulate the injury substitution rule to try and "game the system" will result in sanctions.
  • Teams are not required to play down.
  • There are no second chances on throw-ins.
  • All other 10U rules apply.
  • Matches may end in a tie.

Points will be awarded/deducted and disciplinary actions taken as follows:

  • +6 points for a win
  • +3 points for a tie
  • 0 points for a loss
  • +1 point for each goal scored up to a maximum of 3
  • +1 point for a shutout
  • A forfeit will be scored as a 1 – 0 match in favor of the team that was present. If both teams forfeit then neither will receive any points.
  • –1 point for each player (or substitute) cautioned (Yellow Card)
  • –2 points for each player (or substitute) sent-off (Red Card) Note: a 2nd caution in the same match will be counted as a total deduction of 2 points
  • –2 points if a coach or assistant coach is cautioned (Yellow card)
  • –4 points if a coach or assistant coach is sent-off (Red card)
  • –2 points per substitution violation - a team with more than 4 substitution violations may be disqualified
  • The outcome of an abandoned or terminated match will be determined by the tournament committee.
  • Additional points may be deducted and/or sanctions may be imposed (e.g. matches declared forfeit, teams disqualified etc.) if the tournament committee deems that necessary to deal with egregious situations.
  • Player and/or coach sanctions may also be imposed for misconduct, bad sportsmanship, or substitution violations as determined by the tournament committee.

Tie breakers will be as follows:

  1. Head-to-head play
  2. Least points deducted
  3. Least goals allowed
  4. Higher goal differential (up to 3/game)
  5. Coin toss (hope it does not come to this)

Coaches, you need to plan your substitutions over the 4 matches to avoid having problems. On any given game the referees will only check to see if all players play at least 1/2 of the game. It is your responsibility to make sure that your players play the proper amount of complete games. At the end of each game, come to the tournament table to review your game card to ensure it accurately reflects your substitutions and the match result. All line up cards will be reviewed at the end of pool play and points will be deducted for any substitution violations. We have had teams that did not move on from pool play because of substitution violations. If a player arrives late, is absent, leaves early, is injured etc., you should double check and make sure that this information is recorded by the referee on the lineup card.

Pools & Standings

Boys: The top two teams from each pool advance.
Girls: The top two teams from each pool advance, along with the top two third place teams.

Playoffs

Eight teams will participate in the playoffs which will consist of quarter-finals, semi-finals, a consolation game for the 3rd and 4th place finishers, and a final.

  • Matches are single elimination
  • Matches will consist of two 25 minute halves
  • Half time will be 5 minutes and teams must return PROMPTLY to the field when summoned by the referee
  • Substitutions will take place approximately midway through the first and second halves and at half time
  • No player will sit out 2 "quarters" until all have sat out 1 "quarter".
  • All players who are present must play at least half of the match
  • Players cannot sit out back-to-back "quarters"
  • A player arriving during the 1st "quarter" is only required to play two "quarters"
  • A player arriving during the 2nd or 3rd "quarters" is only required to play one "quarter"
  • If a player is injured and leaves the field, the coach may either 1) substitute the player (the injured player may not return until the next substitution opportunity - the injured player is credited with a “quarter” played regardless of the actual time played)   or 2) “play short” thereby allowing the injured player to return (the player must wait for the referee's permission to return). Any attempt to manipulate the injury substitution rule to try and "game the system" will result in sanctions.
  • No one player may be a goalkeeper for more than two quarters (goalkeeper changes will NOT be allowed during play except for injury)
  • Important note: We will do our best to assist, but ultimately substitutions are the coach's responsibility. The tournament committee will determine the appropriate sanction for improper substitutions, which may be as severe as match forfeiture.

  • Coaches should be prepared for substitutions and not waste playing time
  • Referees, at their discretion, may add time for injury or lengthy substitutions.
  • Teams are not required to play down.

Consolation matches may end in a tie. For all the other matches, a winner is required and the following rules apply:

  • If a match is tied at the end of regulation play, two 5 minute overtime periods will be played.
  • If the match is still tied at the end of the two overtime periods, then the winner will be determined by kicks from the penalty mark.
  • Substitution will be allowed, with the referees permission, at any stoppage in play. The referee will determine when there is an appropriate stoppage in play.
  • Remember to get the referee's approval before substituting and make sure that substitutes enter at the halfway line.
  • There are no restrictions on goalkeeper changes.
  • Only those players on the field of play at the end of OT may participate in kicks from the penalty mark. Coaches and substitutes must stay off the field during that time.
  • The outcome of an abandoned or terminated match will be determined by the tournament committee.
  • Sanctions may be imposed (e.g. matches declared forfeit, teams disqualified etc.) if the tournament committee deems that necessary to deal with egregious situations.
  • Player and/or coach sanctions may also be imposed for misconduct, bad sportsmanship, or substitution violations as determined by the tournament committee.

Playoff Schedule

The boys playoff berths are set as shown below. The 1st place teams are assigned their own 1/4 final. The opposing 2nd place teams are set to avoid pools that they have already played. In addition, the 1st and 2nd place teams from each pool are placed to avoid them meeting in a semi-final.
